A thought from our team - if the public agreed, maybe through a consultation process, on a simple voluntary code of conduct that set out how we hoped our elected representatives would behave while conducting parliamentary business, might that create enough political pressure and enough support that the whole of Parliament might eventually feel and behave differently?

We'd love to hear what people think!
Laura What does the DSP look like as a gift?tag:thedowningstreetproject.ning.com,2009-05-27:2715135:Topic:22942009-05-27T14:00:15.000ZLee Chalmershttp://thedowningstreetproject.ning.com/profile/LeeChalmers
I have been thinking about how to create a gift that stands for the vision and action that the Downing Street Project stands for. And I would like to open this idea up to you so that together we can create a great gift that the DSP can offer to its members, supporters & & &.
Something that leaves a trace, a happy smile, a message...

As a visual starting point I have been thinking of Puzzle pieces:
the shape looks like a human figure and can stand for
building 'blocks'
laying a foundation
togetherness
connecting people
varieties of viewpoints
supporting each other
expanding network
each part has its place in the whole
one ness/ togetherness
dedication of one to support and be supported by the whole
interlocking/ joining forces/ belonging
every piece contains a part of the bigger picture
never ending network of possibilities
piece by piece, step by step
each piece is whole in itself but also open to being part of a greater whole, dream, vision, reality
etc.* PLEASE FEEL FREE TO ADD THOUGHTS HERE

We want to try and find something that is contemporary. Not overly reminiscent of old female traditions, but certainly respecting the traditions that have gone before to pave the way to where we are today...

So here are a few more ideas for what it might look like:
-Textiles/ fabric (thinking of Quilt tradition- women’s tradition, sewing, stitching, story telling, sharing, connecting etc.) A sewing kit that contains fabric in the shape of a puzzle, needle and thread. (that can be linked to another possible DSP (art) project. where everyone can sew their piece into the whole to demonstrate their commitment to the project...
-A cookie cutter in the shape of a puzzle piece
*MORE TO COME 7 PLEASE FEEL FREE TO SHARE YOUR IDEAS ABOUT THIS
I WILL BE SETTING UP A GIFT-GROUP SO JOIN IF YOU WANT TO BE INVOLVED IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF DSP AS A GIFT... Would you vote for a female independent candidate in the UK?tag:thedowningstreetproject.ning.com,2009-05-18:2715135:Topic:21212009-05-18T20:47:58.000ZLee Chalmershttp://thedowningstreetproject.ning.com/profile/LeeChalmers
Lithuania elected its first ever female President today with an overwhelming 69% of the vote. Apparently people in Lithuania are tired of the political system and want something different. I guess an independent MP showed up in that space as an obvious choice.

Do you think that that the British public are ready to vote for some independent female MP’s? Would you vote for one? Would you consider running as one??

Indra and I have been to a quite a few events in London recently on the topic of women in politics. The overwhelming feeling at these events is one of despair and anger. The speakers, quite rightly, speak movingly about the injustice that faces women in leadership. There simply are more men in power and its hard for women to break into that space.
Whilst this is undoubtedly true, The Downing Street Project is about something else. We are about looking to the future where women are sharing leadership with men and that a change has been made to the world because of this. We need to move away from complaining about what doesn’t work, and there is plenty of that, to creating a vision of the future. A future that compels us to engage, to speak up and to move forward into leadership roles ourselves.

Let’s start the discussion. What difference do you think it would make to the UK or the world if at least 50% of elected MP’s were women?
